Ratticus A True Tale from Critter Corner Raymond Birdsell Kim Birdsell

This book is truly funny, made me laugh out loud many times. Having shared so many of these experiences with a variety of animals I can definitely relate. Being a country dweller I have experienced a giant hairy tarantula in the washing, rats walking the rafters in our workshop, raccoons, possums, mountain lions in the back yard, and a 5 foot resident snake. I can definitely say rats are my biggest horror so I enjoyed laughing about one's eventual demise. The blog links added a lot to the tale. It is amazing how much damage a critter can do and how crafty their little minds are.
I am recommending this book to my friends who like to laugh. Thank you Mr. Birdsell!

Ratticus A True Tale from Critter Corner Raymond Birdsell Kim Birdsell Reviews

This short story is about the adventures of a family's attempt to identify and eradicate a rodent from their house. Follow the tale of Sir Ratticus from "the first leaky drain hose until the final snap". Sometimes it does take more than a rocket scientist to solve a problem. Raymond Birdsell's descriptions about his attempts to catch the rascal were humorous and painted vivid pictures. I really identified with his wife, Kim's, reactions. I felt like he (Raymond not Ratticus) was sitting in my living room telling me the story. You can even go to his blog spot and see pictures as the story unfolds. Go ahead; he will wait for you. You are also able to share your own critter tales there. This tale from Critter Corner was fun and informative. Try it out!
My hubby and I got a big laugh out of this tale. I read it aloud to him, and had to stop several times to wipe the tears from my eyes. As one who has had to deal with four-footed furry invaders in the past (mice only; thankfully not rats), I commiserated with the author as he detailed the various techniques and apparati used in an effort to capture and dislodge the uninvited critters. The blog photos were the icing on the cake, and I thank the author for sharing his misadventures in animal husbandry with the rest of us. And I also thank the author for a delightful Mother's Day gift!
I love stories and books that include animals in them, but this one takes the cake. This is so well-written and so humorous that I could see those beady eyes every time the rat emerged from his hiding places. And two cats and a dog didn't even help. Poor Mr. and Mrs. Birdsell tried everything, and when the author said he had water problems, he wasn't kidding. Nearly everything this clever little rodent did caused a massive water leak or a flood. Such power from a little animal like that.

This true story is written with humor, sensitivity and, at times, frustration. I would have been in a hotel room long before Ratticus was ever caught, especially with young children around. The Birdsells' patience is much greater than mine.

I really hope to see more by this author very soon. I'll be sure to watch for more of their critter adventures, because they are well worth reading. Anyone who enjoys true stories that involve animals and humor will enjoy this. Highly recommended.
I really enjoyed this amusing true tale of a young couple waging battle against a mysterious rodent and his kin.
The authors have mastered that tongue-in-cheek sort of humor and I found myself laughing out loud as I followed their relentless string of pest emergencies. I was particularly amused by the wife's slow change in attitude, from a "All of God's little creatures" kind of attitude that forced her poor husband to capture creatures alive, to the point where their sense of morality is superceded by their olfactory sense (how bad will a decaying, poisoned carcass in the walls smell?) I doubt even PETA could blame them at that point. There's something viscerally WRONG with the image of a rat strutting by with the baby's toy in its maw.
The husband writes that he consults his scientific and engineering co-workers and I could totally imagine their enthusiastic attempts to identify the culprit and solve the problem. For some reason, I pictured that scene from Apollo 13 when all the engineers pore over the contents of the shuttle and say, "here's everything we've got, now come up with a solution."
Which brings to mind the age old question, how many engineers, scientists, and exterminators does it take to kill a rodent?
You'll have to read the story to find out!

This book was well written and quite a fast read. It made me laugh and cringe at the things that happened to this family. The story wasn't too long so I read it in one night. This is a true story of how a couple's washing machine, dryer and other electrical equipment was destroyed by some sort of critter that loved chewing at the rubber hoses, which caused their house to flood. This went on for months, but they couldn't find the cause at first. Nor could they catch whatever was eating the rubber. It was a worry to them as they had a young child, and knowing there was something prowling around at night would be quite scary. The author is a great writer and has a way with words.

I don't want to spoil the ending, so I won't say much more, but if you want a bit of a laugh, or have ever had your home invaded by creatures of the night, you should read this story.

Maybe the author could even use this tale and turn it into a fictitious children's story as well. It would sure scare them and make them laugh.

As I live in a rural area, surrounded by forest, our house is also invaded sometimes with weird little critters. I love using these experiences and turning them into children's books. Some older kids would probably like this true tale too. They would be checking all the rubber pipes in the house for sure, not to mention their own electrical equipment. A great read for all.
